A Prediction Market Trader Earned $436,000 from Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.
A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was made public, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from confidential information of the US operation.
Sudden Shift in Wagers
Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January rose in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.
A single trader, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436,000 from a modest bet of $32.5K.
The identity is unknown. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before News Break
Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
But the market's assessment had jumped to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the social media post was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.
Several of other platform users also earned significant sums from similar wagers.
Regulatory Scrutiny Grows
Some lawmakers are starting to take note.
A new rule introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a market.
Market Background
Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the United States, with participants able to wager on everything from sports to political events.
Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.
Insider trading is a crime in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the event betting space.
A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
